BUNONG CACAO
These cocoa beans are single-origin and come from our own farms in Cambodia as well as from partner farmers in the region. Nearly one-third of our farmers and employees belong to indigenous tribes such as the Bunong and Krung. Together with our sister company, Kamkav Farm, we became the first cocoa farmers in Cambodian history in 2014. The hilly lands of Mondulkiri provide ideal growing conditions with their mild, rainy climate, high altitude, fertile red volcanic soil, access to Cambodia’s largest waterfalls, and the presence of Asian elephants. Our cocoa is grown using agroforestry methods, intercropped with forest and fruit trees, eliminating the need for chemical pesticides and enabling natural pest control.
POLYPHENOLS & CADMIUM
Laboratory tests show that cocoa beans from this region (referred to as Bunong Cocoa) contain 6.067% polyphenols (potent plant antioxidants) – the highest amount ever recorded in cocoa beans worldwide. Moreover, Bunong Cocoa is nearly free of cadmium and lead, a growing concern with cocoa beans from other regions, especially Mesoamerica.
